Thorsten Roth began his series of boxer portraits at Brooklyn’s Gleason’s Gym—an environment defined by discipline, repetition, and legacy.

Working between professional fighters and amateurs, the series moves beyond distinction of rank, focusing instead on a shared condition: the will to confront one’s limits and push beyond them.

Rooted in the tradition of the “Sweet Science,” these portraits explore a space where control is learned under pressure—where presence, endurance, and faith define the individual.

The work reflects a tension between structure and instinct, revealing a world in which the real confrontation is not with an opponent, but within oneself.
